Lessons from "The Algebra Of Happiness"
Have you ever wondered, if there is a formula for Happiness?
And if so, what is that Formula? Well, today we are going to look into the top 10 Lessons from Scott Galloway’s Bestselling Book “THE ALGEBRA OF HAPPINESS”.
Personally, this book helped me a lot…and I hope you’ll find it helpful too. So, let’s jump right into it…
Lesson 1: Relationships Matter Most
Imagine you’re at the end of your life. What’s likely to be your biggest regret?
It’s not working more hours or earning an extra buck. It’s often the relationships you didn’t cultivate.
Scott emphasises investing in friendships, family, and love.
For instance, I know a lovely lady who used to be my neighbour and relocated just to look after her elder sister.
I have had this neighbour for a long time – a single lady living in a beautiful house in a beautiful wealthy neighbourhood.
From the outside it seemed like she had everything – health, wealth… but she was lonely. And she didn’t have anyone to share her happiness with.
Eventually she made the hard choice of leaving everything and moving continents to go live with her elder sister in a much less lavish living condition.
When I last heard from her, she sounded so much happier than ever, her life had a purpose, she had someone to share her happiness with.
So, ask yourself: Are you giving your relationships the time and attention they deserve?
Lesson 2: Choose a Career for Skills, not Passion
Well, I’m sure you have heard “follow your passion?” in so many motivational videos right?
But Scott suggests a different approach.
He says to Follow your skills.
Find something you are good at, and after hours and hours of practice get great at it.
The emotional and economic rewards that accompany being great at something will make you passionate about whatever that something is…
He also added…Nobody starts their career passionate about tax law, but great tax lawyers become passionate because their co-workers respect them, they can provide for their families, and they can marry someone amazing.
So, what’s the action plan?
First, identify your talents or skills
Second, find a way to develop and practice these skills
Third, dive deep into learning and improving yourself.
And fourth, stay open to changes and be patient.
Lesson 3: Time is Your Most Valuable Asset
Time. You can’t buy it, hoard it, or get it back once it’s gone.
So how you spend it’s crucial. Scott suggests prioritising activities and people that bring value to your life.
Just imagine spending your weekends doing something you love instead of tedious chores or meaning less activities that you don’t enjoy.
A small change like that can work wonders for your happiness.
Set some boundaries, and don’t be afraid to say NO .. more often.
Lesson 4: Health is Wealth
Let’s face it: you can’t enjoy life if you’re not healthy. You can not NEGLECT your health at any cost.
Scott highlights the importance of taking care of your physical and mental health.
Well, I go to the gym 3 – 4 times a week to manage stress, and for my physical wellbeing and the impact on my mood and energy is massive.
So, are you putting enough effort into your own health? Let me know in the comments what you are doing to improve your health?
Moving on to **Lesson 5: Never Stop Learning**
Knowledge is like fuel for growth and happiness.
Scott encourages lifelong learning.
Let it be for profession or any life skill …. You just must keep learning…when you stop learning you stop growing. Period.
Keep challenging yourself—learn new things, always.
